03/22/2007 - Clearwater, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Boston Red Sox announced on Thursday that Jonathan Papelbon will be the team's closer for the upcoming season.
Papelbon spent last year as Boston's closer and he had 35 saves to go along with a sparkling 0.92 earned run average, the eighth lowest in league history among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched.
He also converted his first 20 save opportunities of the campaign and was named to the American League All-Star team.
The Red Sox originally drafted Papelbon to be a starting pitcher in 2003 but in spring training last year he was so impressive pitching out of the bullpen that the team decided to use him in a relief role.
There was speculation that Boston would shift Papelbon into its starting rotation for this year, but Julian Tavarez will likely get the nod as the fifth starter after pitching well in that role last September.
